Application

Q. Can I apply for admission at the Lakeshore Campus in Holland?

A. Yes, applications are available at the Lakeshore Campus’ Thompson M-TEC in the Resource Center.

Q. Can I Apply Online?

A. Yes, you can! For more information please visit our Enrollment Center home page www.grcc.edu/enrollmentcenter

Q. How soon before I want to start classes should I apply?

A. If a class had openings GRCC will enroll students until the day that classes start. We do not have a wait list so the best chance to get the courses that you want it is strongly recommended that you apply as early as possible.

Lakeshore Campus Services

Q. I need help deciding on what classes to schedule and I don’t know who to call?

A. You can schedule an appointment to meet with the counselor at the Lakeshore Campus by calling 616-234-2200 or you can also reach the Counseling and Career Center at the main campus by calling 616-234-4130.

Q. How do I get my textbooks?

A. If you are in a traditional course you can order your textbooks online at www.grcc.bkstr.com or at the main campus bookstore. If you are in an Open Entry/Open Exit class you can only purchase your textbook after you have gone through an orientation with your instructor. Textbooks for these classes are available at the Thompson M-TEC and can be purchased with cash, check or credit card.

Q. Are there computers available for students to use at the Lakeshore Campus in Holland? What operating system are the computers on? and what are the Computer Lab hours of operation?

A. Yes! The Lakeshore campus has a computer lab at the Thompson M-TEC for students to use. The computers run on Microsoft Windows XP, but are NOT connected to the GRCC network. The computers are located in the Resource Center, room 103, which is open: Monday - Thursday from 8:00 am - 10:00 pm and on Friday from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm

Q. Does the Lakeshore Campus have a photocopier and a fax machine available for student use?

A. Yes, we do have a copy and a fax machine located in the front office of the Thompson M-TEC.

Q. How do I get a raider card?

A. You can now get your raider card at the Thompson M-TEC. You can also get it at the Student Life Center and the Ford Field House at the main campus and at the Tassel M-TEC in Grand Rapids. You need to have a raider card to park at the main campus but you do not need it to park at any of the Lakeshore Campus’ facilities because we do not charge for parking. You will also need a raider card if you are taking a class at the West Ottawa North building.

Counseling

Q. Are counseling services available at the Lakeshore Campus?

A. Yes. To Schedule an appointment with our on site counsleor, please call 616-234-2200.

Tuition

Q. How much does it cost to attend classes at Grand Rapids Community College?

A. If you are a resident of Kent County you pay in-district tuition which is $84.50 per contact hour. If you are a resident of Ottawa County or any other county you pay out of district tuition which is $181.00 per contact hour.

Financial Aid

Q. Am I eligible for financial aid? How do I apply?

A. You can apply for grants and loans through the United States Department of Education. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov or at the Lakeshore Campus’ Thompson M-TEC. GRCC’s federal school code is 002267. For more information you can visit GRCC’s financial aid web page at www.grcc.edu/financialaid.

Q. Is there a deadline when applying for financial aid?

A. There are deadlines for most forms of financial aid. For FAFSA deadlines, visit the FAFSA web page at www.fafsa.ed.gov

Tutorial Services

Q. Are there tutors available if I need additional help?

A. Yes, tutoring is availabe at the Thompson M-TEC and at the Midtown Center. See the Tutorial Schedule for more information or call 616-234-2200.

Challenge Exams and Assessments

Q. What is a Challenge exam?

A. Grand Rapids Community College provides an opportunity to earn college credit through Challenge examinations. GRCC faculty members develop the Challenge exams, which enable students to test out of designated college courses.The fee is $55 per exam.

Q. Which Challenge exams are offered at the Lakeshore Campus?

A. At the Lakeshore Campus’ Thompson M-TEC offers Challenge exams in the following:

DR 228 – Intro to CAD

EG 110 – Industrial Graphics with CAD

MN 114 – Basic Blueprint Reading

MN 119 – Intro to Machine Operation

MN 213 – Machinery Handbook

MN 136 – Basic Arc Welding

MN 235 – CNC Machine Programming

MN 249 – Statistical Process Control

TE 103 – Technical Mathematics

TE 104 – Advanced Technical Mathematics

Q. What is an ACCUPLACER?

A. The ACCUPLACER placement test is for students who are planning on attending Grand Rapids Community College. This test is a computerized assessment designed to help to identify your basic skill level in Math, Reading and English.

The ACCUPLACER is not a pass or fail test. The results will assist you and your academic advisor to develop an appropriate academic plan at GRCC and will determine what classes best fit you and your academic needs.

Q. Can I take the ACCUPLACER at the Lakeshore Campus?

A. Yes! You can take the ACCUPLACER at the Lakeshore Campus’ Thompson M-TEC. Please call 616-234-2200 to schedule an appointment.

Student Records

Q. How do I get a copy of my transcript? What is the difference between “official” and “unofficial”?

A. An unofficial transcript is a printed list of classes and the grades that you have earned while at GRCC. You can see and print your own unofficial transcript using your online account; you can also get a copy of your unofficial transcript at the Thompson M-TEC.

An Official Transcript can only be produced by the Registrar’s office, located at the main campus in Grand Rapids. An Official Transcript is printed on special paper, sealed and signed by the college registrar.

Course Registration

Q. Where can I find a list of classes that are offered at the Lakeshore Campus?

A. The Lakeshore Campus schedule of classes can be found online by clicking here. A hard copy can be obtained at the Thompson M-TEC or Midtown Center or one can be mailed to you by calling 616-234-2200.

Q. How do I register for a class?

A. You can register online using your online student account. You can also register in person at the Lakeshore Campus’ Thompson M-TEC or at the Enrollment Center in Grand Rapids.

Q. When can I register for classes?

A. Enrollment schedules change each semester. It will be posted at www.grcc.edu or you can call 616-234-2200 for more information.
