What is Career Development?
In today's world, effective career management skills are among the most important a person can acquire.
The traditional practice of matching up one's unique personality traits with an occupation that requires similar characteristics is not enough. We live in a rapidly changing, complex and information-based society. It has become increasingly clear to those of us who provide career direction assistance that the role of a paid, full-time worker must be appropriately coordinated with other important roles. Very often, these other "key roles" can be that of son or daughter; brother or sister; student; parent or spouse; friend; homemaker; citizen, leisurite, etc.
Furthermore, the accelerated pace in the number of changes that seem to be occuring in the lives of a significant number of people, along with the need to respond to such changes, has kept qualified career specialists busy, and at times, overwhelmingly so. Consequently, a continuing, and most likely growing, demand by many for acquiring the proficiency of life or career development will be vital to maintaining a sense of upwardness and satisfaction.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT is the step-by-step process of choices made and changes experienced by a person during his or her lifetime, particularly as they relate to their impact on major roles. It is primarily a lifelong effort to establish or confirm and then maintain appropriate direction and balance in life. IS CAREER DEVELOPMENT REALLY THAT IMPORTANT?
