Student Mathematics League
History
The Student Mathematics League, organized by the American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges (AMATYC) since 1981, was founded in 1970 by Nassau Community College in New York. Since then, the league has grown to include 120 colleges in more than 20 states. Today, over three thousand community college students participate in the event nationwide. The SML competition consists of two written multiple choice tests administered at a participating community college over the course of the academic year. The level of the tests is precalculus mathematics, and students may use any calculator without a QWERTY type keyboard or a disk drive. Awards are given out by AMATYC on both team and individual levels. The individual with the highest score nationally from the two tests receives a $3000 scholarship to continue his/her education at an accredited four year institution. The top three (and possibly more depending on funding) scorers at GRCC are awarded the Mathematics Department Scholarships.

For the past several years, Grand Rapids Community College has hosted the Ninth and Tenth Grade Math Challenge competition. Informational flyers and registration forms are sent out to high schools in the fall.
Math Can Be Fun
It is hoped that this event will spark interest and enthusiasm in both students and teachers by providing the opportunity to explore mathematical problems in a fun and competitive environment. Trophies are awarded to the top four teams in each division. The students in those teams also receive individual awards. The four divisions are determined by school enrollment.
