Law Enforcement (Code 808)
Associate in Applied Arts and Sciences or
Associate in Arts

Academic Department: Criminal Justice

The Law Enforcement program is a pre-service, "academy-type" program that prepares students to accept positions as qualified police officers.

An increasing number of police agencies in Michigan now require that an individual be "licensed" prior to applying for a law enforcement position. "Licensed" indicates that a person has completed the minimum basic training requirements and meets the minimum employment standards set forth by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES).

The GRCC Coordinator of Criminal Justice has been authorized by the MCOLES to identify graduates of the two-year (associate degree) law enforcement program as licensable. Employers do not have to send licensed graduates to a police academy before they can perform duties.

Enrollment in the Police Academy is restricted to students who meet certain requirements set forth by the MCOLES. To learn about upcoming information meetings click here

Students in Law Enforcement may qualify for either the Associate in Applied Arts and Sciences degree or the Associate in Arts. Those who wish to earn the AA should take care that they meet the communications, humanities, social science and natural science requirements for that degree. Refer to the group distribution requirements for the Associate in Arts Degree in the front of the Catalog.
