Young Women in High Demand/High Wage Careers Conference:
Exploring Non-Traditional Careers
Grand Rapids, MI -- To ensure women are prepared for high-skilled, high wage occupations, and to improve the economic potential for women in high-paying positions, Grand Rapids Community College is co-sponsoring the 3rd Annual Young Women in High Demand/High Wage Careers Conference.
As in years past, 11th and 12th grade High school women will be encouraged to break stereotypes and enter non-traditional careers from engineering to construction to pilot. The purpose of the conference is to ensure that young women have the opportunities and knowledge to chose any career that appeals to them, "traditional" or "non-traditional".
Other breakout session topics will include Emergency Medical Technician, Medical Careers, Firefighter, Chemical Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, Video/TV Production, Electrician/Electronics, Veterinary Science, Engineering, Computer Careers, AutoCAD, Entrepreneur, Law Enforcement, Tool and Die, Welding, and Web Page Design.
Supporting this cause is the conference’s keynote speaker, Chief Judge Sara J. Smolenski, who has served as a Judge with the 63rd District Court for twelve years and as Chief Judge for the last six years. Judge Smolenski has been active in community-wide organizations committed to the advancement of women including the YWCA and the Women Lawyers Association throughout her life.
The Young Women in High Demand and High Wage Careers Conference is co-sponsored by the Allegan County Intermediate School District and the Kent Intermediate School District. The conference will be held Wednesday, May 29, 2002 from 9:15 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Grand Rapids Community College’s Applied Technology Center, at no charge to attendees, though pre-registration is required.
