Example of Worksite Tour Schedule

  • Tour time frame is generally 1-2 hours
  • When the group arrives, give a general overview of your company (15-20 minutes): what service do you provide or what do you produce, number of employees, how long in business, annual sales etc..
  • Review any safety requirements
  • Inform students about the tour they are about to take. Should they look for anything in particular? Will it be noisy, dark, bright, do they need to be quiet in a certain area etc…
  • You may wish to give students an "assignment" while on tour. For example, give them a Polaroid camera and have them take pictures, give them a list of items they should find while on tour, write down questions they may have etc… This is not required but may add to the educational aspect of the tour.
  • Divide students into manageable (size) groups for the tours. Generally speaking groups of 8 or fewer work best for interaction.
  • Have your employees who will be conducting the tour ready to go and with a planned time to meet back with the large group.
  • Keep the tours timely - the schools have a schedule to maintain as well.
  • Allow time at the end of the tours for students to ask questions.
  • Distribute the evaluation forms and get feedback on the quality of the worksite experience.
  • After the students have left, debrief with your employee group who participated. How was the experience for your employees? Are there areas in need of improvement? Any feedback to the educational institution that will improve the experience in the future? Anything the Community Work based Learning coordinator might assist you with?
  • Send copies of your evaluations to the Community Work Based Learning Coordinator and the school contact involved for tracking purposes.
