GRCC PLANS TWO FAREWELL EVENTS FOR OUTGOING PRESIDENT JUAN OLIVAREZ

June 9, 2008 Grand Rapids, MI Two events - one open to the community, one by reservation - for Dr. Juan Olivarez, will cap his successful decade at the helm of Grand Rapids Community College.

On Wednesday, June 18, an open reception for GRCC students, employees and community members will be held from 3-6 PM in the Applied Technology Center. No reservations are necessary for this free event which will include a brief program at 5:15 PM.

On Thursday, June 19, the GRCC Board of Trustees and the GRCC Foundation Board of Directors will present a night of over-the-top fun to celebrate the leadership, partnership and friendship of Dr. Olivarez. Plans for this roast include:

6 - 7:30 p.m.

Enjoy Nuevo Latino cuisine created by the faculty, staff and students of The Secchia Institute for Culinary Education and lively music by the GRCC Mariachi Band. Latin-themed beverages will be offered at the cash bar.

7:30 - 9 p.m.

Judge Sara Smolenski, Mistress of Ceremonies, will keep the heat on throughout The All Star Celebrity Roast to be held in the Heritage Restaurant and Terrace at GRCC's Applied Technology Center.

Tickets are $75 per person. Proceeds will benefit the Olivarez Scholarship Fund through the Grand Rapids Community College Foundation. RSVP to 616-234-3939.

Following the two celebrations Dr. Olivarez will oversee transition of the college leadership to Interim President Anne Mulder, who will assume the presidency on July 7, 2008.

Grand Rapids Community College, established in 1914, offers both liberal arts and workforce development degrees, certification and workshops. Student enrollment for both credit and non-credit courses reached 26,000 in the 2007-08 academic year.
