Curriculum Service Learning
Curriculum Service-Learning involves a faculty determined commitment to a community partner. Curriculum ASL is specifically tied to one or more course outcomes and is officially noted on student transcripts. In order to maintain the integrity of this designation, faculty must adhere to supportive policy and procedure. Faculty willing to provide this opportunity should contact the ASLC for further details. Please note, this is a faculty provided opportunity only. Students wishing to obtain this transcript designation must register for a course section noting an ASL component in the “Schedule of Classes.”
Recurrent Service Learning
Students may elect to do an independent study version of ASL. For this option, students will choose a non-profit and a faculty member to work with for a self-chosen length of time. At the end of their experience, students submit a reflection paper. This is a service learning opportunity, however, it will not add an ASL endorsement to a student’s transcript.
Event Service Learning
Event ASL involves a commitment to a particular event coordinated by the ASLC. Each year the ASLC works with multiple community organizations to offer large one-day service-learning opportunities. Some of these opportunities include: such as “Make a Difference Day”, “Martin Luther King Day”, and “National Day of Service.” Students can register directly at the ASLC or faculty may register some or all students from a class to engage in Event ASL opportunities. Faculty doing Curriculum ASL may use events as their class service project to increase the ease of ASL implementation.
Community Service Work Study
GRCC Community Service Work Study (CSWS) is a program which supports students who wish to explore and build academic and career skills through addressing important social needs in partnership with local non-profit community organizations. This program offers part-time community based positions for eligible GRCC students as part of their financial aid award.
Michigan Service Scholars
The Michigan Service Scholars Program [MSS] provides $300,000 annually in scholarships state-wide through a grant to Michigan Campus Compact. Students who are selected will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship for their educational needs upon the completion of 300 hours of Community Service in one calendar year (9.5-10 hours per week on average).
