GRCC ADDS TO SECURITY NETWORK ON DOWNTOWN CAMPUS
Two new kiosks part of continuous improvement plan for safety
October 14, 2008 Grand Rapids, MI – Grand Rapids Community College has added a new layer of protection to people on the Downtown Grand Rapids campus. Two bright yellow emergency communications kiosks now stand at the north and south ends of the college’s main thoroughfare, Bostwick Commons.
The kiosks with their simple instructions, bright blue lights and speakers are an addition to the system that exists in buildings and parking ramps across campus.
“These new kiosks add two important elements to our crisis communication capabilities,” said Patrick Cwayna, vice president for community relations, who heads up the college’s crisis communications team. “It puts call boxes on the commons where our highest traffic occurs, and it gives us a mechanism to broadcast a message to students who are outside.”
The kiosks are very simple and quick to operate. Once a button is pushed, a call is immediately sent to GRCC’s Campus Police Dispatch and the blue strobe begins to flash.
Two more kiosks are set to be installed on the campus. Off-campus sites, such as the M-TEC buildings have crisis plan to suit their specific locations, too.
“We have many overlapping systems to provide for the safety of everyone at our various locations and we will never stop updating the way we can perform in an emergency at GRCC,” said Cwayna.
Grand Rapids Community College, established in 1914, offers both liberal arts and workforce development degrees, certification and workshops. Student enrollment for both credit and non-credit courses reached 26,000 in the 2007-08 academic year.
