EHLERS TO ATTEND NOV. 3 INTRODUCTION OF GRANT SERVICES;
RECIPIENTS DEMONSTRATE HOW MONIES WILL BENEFIT AREA CHILDREN
October 29, 2008, Grand Rapids, MI - The kids just like the books. They probably won’t be aware that the man reading to them is a U.S. Congressman or that the other guests are on hand to see a $4.5 million grant at work.
But those children are at the heart of the huge grant that the U.S. Department of Education has awarded Grand Rapids Community College and its partners under its Early Reading First Grant Program.
U.S. Representative Vern Ehlers, a former educator himself, and an advocate of school library improvements across the U.S., will be at the head of the class at Harrison Park School, Monday, November 3, at 10 a.m.
The dollars will serve low-income children learning to read. The grant was awarded in September, but this kickoff event was delayed until now so the services would be underway.
With the $4.5 million GRCC and its partners from Grand Rapids Public Schools and the YMCA will develop Centers of Early Childhood Educational Excellence at five sites in Grand Rapids, serving 144 at-risk children in 9 early childhood classrooms each year.
