University of Adelaide is using PHP to access PeopleSoft. This is a good example of completely custom made, home grown search page. They are in total control of how it looks, what server it runs on, and what query it uses. For that matter technically this search page could use an extract of the real data in another database (a data warehousing idea)

Butler University, on the other hand is using Microsoft technology most likely accessing PeopleSoft on MS SQL. This is again a custom home grown solution.
