GRCC TO OPEN SERIES ON ELECTION
ISSUES
WITH FORUM ON SAME SEX MARRIAGE
March 22, 2004, Grand Rapids, MI –
In keeping with the college’s commitment to civic engagement, Grand Rapids
Community College is undertaking a series of panel discussions to assist
students in making informed decisions about issues that will be important in
November elections. To get an early start, GRCC has scheduled the first panel,
on same-sex marriage for Thursday April 1, from 7 – 8:30 PM in the Applied
Technology Center on the college’s campus.
For this first panel, Sean Kosofsky of the Triangle Foundation and Gary Glenn of
the American Family Association will represent the opposing views of same sex
marriages. They will examine the social, political, and legal implications of
same sex marriage. The panel will be moderated by Keith St. Clair, GRCC
Political Science Professor.
Student Congress members will be staffing a voter registration table and
distributing voter registration cards to those who are not registered. While
primarily intended for GRCC students, the discussions will be open to the whole
community.
Future topics for panel discussions being considered for Fall 2004 include
partial birth abortion and affirmative action, -- possibly a multi-college forum
for the latter.
“These are big issues that will have an impact on our country for years to come,
not to mention individual lifestyles,” said Student Activities Director Eric
Mullen. Students have to make educated decisions; they can’t get objective
information from political commercials and sound bytes.”
Seating at the April 1 panel discussion is limited and available on first-come
first-serve basis.
Grand Rapids Community College, established in 1914, has a student enrollment
just over 13,000 and employs approximately 900. The College is an Equal
Opportunity Employer.
