Above is an photograph of the Calkins Science Center, which opened Winter Semester 2000.  It is located on Bostwick Avenue next to the Ford Fieldhouse on the Grand Rapids Community College Main Campus. This new building houses the Biological Sciences Department and the Physical Sciences Department. The latest in technology is included in the 150,000 square foot science center. The building is focused on students and is equiped with many spaces for students to study, relax, and meet.  Scroll down or click here to see some photos. 

A few of the building highlights are:

  • A 150 seat auditorium.
  • A Biological Sciences Computer Laboratory.
  • A Physical Science Computer Laboratory.
  • Several Distance Learning Laboratories.
  • A 1,700 square foot Greenhouse.
  • A Science Museum.
  • A Prehistoric garden
  • A Cadaver Room featuring:
  • - four cadavers
    - stainless steel cabinetry and sinks
    - foot pedal operated sinks
    - key card access to room for security
    - surgical lighting system
    - programmable room temperature, and
    - folding stainless steel shelves around 
      perimeter of room.
