GRCC JOINS GOVERNOR’S “RETURN TO LEARN” CAMPAIGN
Purpose is to coordinate efforts to boost
educated workforce numbers in Michigan; attract business

Nov. 7, 2005 - Grand Rapids, Mich. - - Responding to the need for more Michigan residents to acquire postsecondary education in order for the state economy to remain viable, Governor Jennifer Granholm recently declared November to be “Return to Learn” month in Michigan. The state-wide campaign has several goals aimed at removing barriers to education, including:

  • Creating a degree completion plan using previously accumulated credit to acquire a credential (such as a degree).
  • Answering questions about financial aid and building on previously completed coursework.
  • Advising about transfer opportunities.

All of the participating colleges and universities will unify their efforts through a web site link exchange coordinated with the Governor’s office.

Grand Rapids Community College is proud to stand behind the governor’s endeavor. President Juan Olivarez, a member of the state’s Cherry Commission on Higher Education, said, “I’m very pleased to see this action taking place as a direct result of the work of the Cherry Commission.”

Though the college is already engaged in many of the activities planned as part of the “Return to Learn” campaign, it couldn’t come at a better time. The initiative corresponds perfectly with GRCC’s new “Student Success” focus, which is concentrated on making students more successful so that they meet their educational goals. This will raise the visibility of GRCC’s efforts, as well as providing the college with yet another conduit with which to reach out to underserved populations in our community.

GRCC has been educating learners since 1914 when it was the first 2-year college in Michigan and the seventh in the country. The college offers over 150 degree options in its arts and sciences and workforce development programs. Enrollment is at its highest in the school’s 91 year history.
