About the "Return to Learn" Initiative

What: Governor Granholm’s “Return to Learn” Initiative
When: Kick-off in November, 2005 – running through May, 2006. November is now “Return to Learn” month in Michigan.
Where: State-wide (individual efforts to take place on the campuses of all participating colleges and universities) – as well as coordination through the Governor’s Office in Lansing.
Why: The Governor’s office is responding to the need for more Michigan residents to acquire postsecondary education in order for the state economy to remain viable (one of the findings of the Cherry Commission Report, which President Olivarez helped to produce).
How: The state-wide campaign has several goals aimed at removing barriers to education, including:
  • Creating a degree completion plan using previously accumulated credit to acquire a credential (such as a degree)
  • Answering questions about financial aid and building on previously completed coursework.
  • Advising them about transfer opportunities.
What You Need to Know: Though the “Return to Learn” campaign reiterates much of what the college already does, it comes at an excellent time, corresponding perfectly with GRCC’s new “Student Success” focus, which is concentrated on making students more successful so that they meet their educational goals. This will raise the visibility of our efforts, as well as providing the college with yet another conduit with which to reach out to underserved populations in our community.
