STUDENT CLUBS & ORGANIZATIONS

African Student Organization
The African Student Organization provides an academic and social support network for African students attending GRCC. Participation is welcomed from students from Africa as well as any others who are interested in learning more about the cultures of Africa. The organization focuses on providing academic support through peer tutoring and guest lectures, as well as promoting the cultures of Africa on campus and in the community.

Anime Club
The GRCC Anime Club is a group that meets once a week to show on the big screen anime titles-old, new, and those that haven’t officially been released in the U.S. We are for the diehard fans and those who are just curious.

Black Student Union (BSU)
The BSU is open to all students interested in multi-ethnic concerns and activities. The organization promotes knowledge of family history, attends cultural events, and places emphasis on education. BSU sponsors social gatherings and provides a support system for students of African descent. We encourage racial healing through interaction with students of other cultural backgrounds.

Computer Club
This club is open to all GRCC students with a desire to learn more about the computer field regardless of their fields of specialization.

Deaf A.S.L. (American Sign Language)
The purpose of this organization shall be to increase the awareness of deaf culture and history, to augment the sign language skills and professional growth of those interested in doing so, and to increase the recognitions of American Sign Language (ASL) as a language and its role in the linguistic minority of Deaf/deaf users.

Delta Pi Alpha Honor Society
The Delta Ph Alpha Honor Recognition honors those students graduating with superior scholastic achievement. Recipients are selected from the top five (5) prevent of the graduating class for the 2008-2009 academic year. To be considered for the honor, students must file a graduation audit by February 13, 2009 and complete graduation requirements by the end of summer session 2009. Letter grades X,N,I,E on the student transcript on this date will disqualify students. For more information contact the Dean of Student affairs Office at (616) 234-3925

Earth Club
The Earth Club is open to any student interested in the environment and its sustainability. The club meets regularly during Fall and Winter semesters. Members may participate in various environmental projects in the community and the club cooperates with similar clubs at other colleges in the region.

E.L.S.O.L. (Hispanic Student Organization)
The ELSOL (meaning Esperanza, Latina, Sonyando, Orta, Leyenda) welcomes any GRCC student wishing to be involved in promoting Hispanic heritage, culture and Spanish language on campus and in the community. Members serve as role models for pre-college students by encouraging determination, discipline and good study habits.

Foreign Affairs Club
The Foreign Affairs Club is open to any student interested in learning about international relations and the UN. The Club attempts to raise money for the purpose of representing a country each year and attending the American Model UN in Chicago.

GRCC League for the Arts
The mission of the GRCC League o the Arts is to explore, experience, educate and stimulate awareness and passion for the arts. We intend to promote a supportive environment for the arts in our community.

International Student Organization (ISO)
The ISO provides a support network for international students, and welcomes students from abroad and the U.S., as well as interested members of the faculty, staff and community. The ISO assists students in adjusting to living in the U.S. and helps ease their transition into GRCC and the community.

Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship
Christian Fellowship provides interested students an opportunity to participate in prayer and Bible study groups as well as Christian fellowship experiences. A primary goal is to establish or strengthen the spiritual life of members to enable them to identify or reinforce their unique mission and more effectively negotiate obstacles during, outside, and beyond college.

Muslim Student Association (MSA)
The main goal of the MSA is to invite discussion and understanding about Islam through meetings and events. All students are welcome.

Native American Organization (NAO)
Our purpose is to work together as a team to provide cultural education and awareness through community outreach about Native American culture.

Phi Theta Kappa
The purpose of PTK is to recognize and support academic excellence. Eligibility is determined by the International Honor Society and requires students to have earned a minimum of 12 credit hours and have a 3.5 grade average. Our chapter engages in activities that promote scholarship, fellowship, service and leadership.

StandOUT (formerly the Gay/Straight Alliance)
The purpose of StandOut is to provide students with an opportunity to network and discuss the issues acing today’s gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students. The organization is open to ALL students interested in taking a positive approach to these issues in a safe, supportive and confidential environment.

Student Science Society (SSS)
The GRCC SSS is meant to encourage all students in their interest of science. We offer lectures, trips and sponsor speakers twice a year at the Calkins Science Center. Meetings are bi-weekly

Women’s Issues Now (WIN)
WIN is a student organization that addresses issues that impact today’s women, both at school and in their personal lives. While it is a group dedicated to helping women, everyone is welcome.

Campus Activities Board (CAB)
The GRCC Campus Activities Board (CAB) is a student organization that provides experiences that enrich the GRCC community through programs that are fun, collaborative, diverse and value learning.

The GRCC student newspaper is published twice monthly and distributed throughout the campus. Interested GRCC student may contribute writing, photography or art. Located in Room 339 of the Main Building.

The Raider Dance Team offers quality entertainment during halftime at the basketball games. Tryout is open to any interested GRCC student.

Associate Degree Nursing (ADN Club)
This club supports all (ADN) students, participates in health-related community service projects and organizes and hosts bi-annual pinning ceremonies, for ADN graduates.

Child Development Club
Membership is open to any interested GRCC student. The purpose is to provide opportunities to learn more about current issues, legislation, volunteer training, and career experiences in the early childhood field.

Dental Assistants
This organization’s members are enrolled in the Dental Assisting Program. The purpose of the DA Club is to participate in dental related community service projects and to organize and host the DA students’ pinning ceremony and various class trips.

Dental Hygienists
This club is open to GRCC students enrolled in the Dental Hygiene Program. It provides support to all DH students, participates in dental-related service projects, and fundraisers to help defray costs of professional activities.

Our purpose is to promote social interaction and ongoing learning related to our aging community and promotion of the GRCC Gerontology Certificate Program.

MUSIC GROUPS

Chamber Orchestra
Membership is open to any qualified student regardless of field study. This group involves study and performance of orchestral literature from all periods of history; this may be taken for credit or not credit.

College Choir
A singing organization that concentrates on great choral classics, sacred and secular and frequently joins with the Band and Orchestra for performance. Membership is open without audition to any GRCC student. May be taken for credit or no credit.

Concert Band
Open to all qualified students regardless of their filed of specialization. Performs at college and civic functions as well as several full concerts each year. May be taken for credit or no credit.

Guitar Ensemble
Membership is by audition and open to any GRCC student. Students must own a nylon string acoustic guitar. The ensemble performs Renaissance through contemporary music. May be taken for credit or non credit.

Jazz Orchestra
A performing organization of 16 musicians who perform arrangements of all styles. This is an opportunity for instruction in improvisation for all instruments. Membership is by audition.

Kent Philharmonia
Open to students from GRCC, other colleges and the community at large. Memberships: by audition. Interested students should contact the conductor or manager before enrollment. The KPO performs major orchestral literature in approximately seven concerts each season, and rehearses one evening a week... Contact: Lynn Asper, lasper@grcc.edu

Madrigal Singers
An artistic vocal ensemble that specializes in music of the Renaissance, Baroque and the 20th Century. Interested students should speak to Mr. Dobreff prior to or on the first day of classes in the fall to discuss the audition process.

Percussion Ensemble
Membership is by audition and open to any GRCC student. This group performs music written for modern percussion ensembles. May be taken for credit or no credit.

Shades of Blue
An international-award-winning vocal jazz ensemble primarily concerned with artistic and creative vocal jazz for ensemble performance. Advanced solo experience, microphone techniques and vocal improvisation are part of the offering. Student who audition will prepare a vocal solo from the Broadway, pop vocal, or jazz idiom. Auditions take place during the first week of classes. Director: Duane Davis, ddavis@grcc.edu
