Gerald R. Ford Fieldhouse Annual Report
GERALD R. FORD HEALTH AND
SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES
As part of its operating purpose, the staff of the Gerald R. Ford Fieldhouse attempt to provide the students and staff of Grand Rapids Community College, along with members of our community the opportunity to improve the overall quality of their life by providing the facilities and space for structured as well as unstructured physical activity, which is known to improve the quality of life. Also to provide the members of the community with the prospect of having a partnership and positive relationship with the College, thereby fostering future good will and positive support from the community in which we live and work. We are committed to the principle that no one entity can function well by itself. It is through corroboration, the building of partnerships and team building that we, and the entire College become stronger.
When engaging with and interacting with our many various customer groups, we along with the College subscribe to certain values. We always make every attempt to be responsive to the needs of our customer groups. It is expected that all affairs will be conducted with the highest standards of accountability, both to the organization and to the individuals with whom we work and serve. It is important that we remain innovative in thinking as well as actions, and that this innovation is visible to all as we do our work. It is our belief that our service groups are wide range and diverse. Therefore, our approach needs to be diverse and needs to accommodate individuals from many backgrounds. Excellence is paramount in all that we do. Our services and/or products need to be the best available. Those having contact with the Ford Fieldhouse need to feel they are receiving the best available service or product by staff who really do care. While conducting affairs, all persons are treated with the highest respect, regardless of the situation. Respect is given and expected in return. Service to our students, staff, and community is also highly valued by the Ford Fieldhouse operating staff. Customer service is pinnacle to all that we do.
This report is compiled to provide the reader and all interested parties with a snap shot view of the scope of activities that take place within the Ford Fieldhouse or supported by its operations during the course of one fiscal year. This report will focus on the time period running from

GERALD R. FORD HEALTH AND
UTILIZATION REPORT
The Grand Rapids Community College Gerald R. Ford Fieldhouse is a large, versatile, dynamic, complex, and state of the art facility, which provides facility space, time, and services to a vast number of organizations all of whom have widely divergent needs, goals and desires. The facility is multi-functional, with the capacity to perform several complex functions simultaneously and efficiently. The well-seasoned operating staff of the Ford Fieldhouse is well-grounded in the sound and prudent practices associated with facility operation and customer service. These attributes combined with an outstanding facility make the Ford Fieldhouse an exceptional educational, athletic, and event establishment one which services the College well, internally, as well as in the community.
Our programs and activities have been carefully orchestrated and arranged in such a fashion as to provide each of our individual facility users with the optimum level of space, time and support service necessary to sustain their individual activity or programs in the highest standard of quality, and to make them excel when possible. Our goal, is not only to meet our user group's needs in a timely and professional fashion, we also attempt to do this in such a way as to maximize the level of efficiency within the facility. This is a fluid process, which is on-going at all times. This is always carried out in an environment of mutual respect for all parties involved. A brief description of the activities and services offered at the Ford Fieldhouse can be found in subsequent portions of this text. Later portions of the document will focus on providing actual numbers from the past year.
1. SUMMER PROGRAMS (SWIMMING)
During the years prior to 1995, the
Following continued program difficulties in 2001, the focus was revamped and changed for initiation during the Summer of 2002. At this time, the Learn2Swim Program was launched. The primary focus of this program is to provide swimming instruction and basic water safety instruction to small children. It has been extremely well received by staff as well as members of the community. The program has been so successful that we have found it necessary to continue program offerings during the entire calendar year, as space, staff, and time permit.
Current planning calls for the introduction of Water Safety Instruction Classes and Lifeguarding classes to be offered at the Ford Fieldhouse pool. These classes will become available to

The numbers of class offerings taught by the departmental instructional staff continues to evolve and improve, providing innovative and responsive improvements in both service and program flexibility to GRCC students in a student-centered environment. Specific numbers related to sections and actual student numbers will appear in subsequent portions of this text.

During the course of the 2002-2003 year, the GRCC Music Department did not conduct any activities at the Ford Fieldhouse. The Music Department did make occasional use of the Play Field, which is under the scheduling control of the Fieldhouse Events Director. This use is very irregular in nature.

EDUCATION CLASSES (SWIMMING)
Grand Rapids Community College is obligated under the provisions of the 1991 Discontinuance Agreement between Grand Rapids Public Schools and Grand Rapids Community College (and renewed for an additional five years in April of 1997, and for an additional five years in May of 2002) to provide pool space and time for Central High School to use in the operation of their Physical Education Department and Athletic Department. During the 2002-2003 year, no activity took place under the Physical Education category. This occurred at the option of

F. FACULTY, HEALTH CLUB, AND STUDENT RECREATION ACTIVITIES
The Ford Fieldhouse provides a unique arrangement. The configuration of the activity areas and the scheduling of these areas make it possible to offer on a large-scale basis individual recreation and exercise time. The benefits of exercise and recreation are continually expanding. The pool, free weight room, racquetball courts, exercise room, running/walking track, and basketball courts are always in use when scheduled for open recreation. This has been done without compromising the integrity of the other program offerings we have.
F1. INTRUMURAL PROGRAM
This program falls under the direct line supervision of the Ford Fieldhouse A.M. and P.M Building And Activity Supervisors. During the course of the 2002-2003 year, this program provided structured, yet informal recreational and exercise opportunities for many

I. COMMUNITY FITNESS PROGRAMS
The Gerald R. Ford Fieldhouse offers members of the community the opportunity to interact with the College and participate in our community health club. This allows members of the community to make use of the exercise and activity facilities around regularly scheduled College activity. We have partnering arrangements with many of the area business concerns as well. This provides the community with positive interaction with the College, its students, and provides our student employees with an excellent real time training environment for those seeking job opportunities in the areas of health and wellness and/or facility operations.
In conjunction with the Older Learner’s Center, we initiated a Senior Health Club during the 2001-2002 year. This program has continued to maintain its popularity during the 2002-2003 year. It aids in providing a valuable link between the College and the senior members of the community, in which we live.
I.1 FIRE FIGHTERS
During the 2002-2003 year, we initiated a pilot program with the City of Grand Rapids Fire Department. We provided pre-employment physical training on a structured basis for persons attempting to complete the department’s hiring process. We had several candidates in this program that lasted for a duration of 15 weeks. It was a highly successful program. This program was done on a voluntary basis. The choice to participate was left to each individual candidate.
J. COMMUNITY AND SPECIAL EVENTS
The versatility of the Ford Fieldhouse makes it conducive for the operation of activities, which are not athletic in nature. The facility serves well as a venue for the production of banquets both large and small, concerts, commencement programs, circuses, lectures, and trade shows. All have been scheduled and successfully produced within these facilities.
K. SPECIAL ATHLETIC EVENTS
Due to the complex and interwoven activity schedule of the Ford Fieldhouse, it is in almost constant operation. The regularly scheduled hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. It is often necessary to remain in operation late evenings and weekends in order to accommodate the needs of our various customer groups.
It takes a great deal of staff support to successfully conduct an operation having the scale, frequency, and magnitude of the activities found at the Ford Fieldhouse. The on-sight management team of the Ford Fieldhouse includes an Events Director, Office Manager, Aquatic Supervisor/Sports Information Director, an A.M. Building and Activity Supervisor and a P.M. Building And Activity Supervisor. Servicing the custodial and maintenance operation of the facility is a Building Manager, seven full-time custodians including one custodian on the second shift, which we have on a shared basis. This person also is assigned to two other buildings on the campus. While we are able to manage under this arrangement, the shared concept on the second shift is less than desirable in terms of our operation. There have been situations during which we have had to fend for ourselves when custodial services were needed due to the second shift person's obligations elsewhere in the College. It is hoped that this can be changed at some point in the near future. A listing of the operational staff along with their individual contact information follows:

The full-time supervisory staff work with a large contingent of student employees. At some points in the year, we have over 60 student employees on our payroll. This serves a two-fold purpose. First, it allows the student employee to have on-campus employment. Student employees are given the opportunity to earn income that aids in defraying the ever-increasing costs of today’s college education. Secondly, it is part of our mission to prepare students for the real world that they will encounter after leaving the formal education process. This work experience provides them with just such training. They have the opportunity to develop and fine tune many of the skills that will be needed to compete in the real marketplace once departing from the college. The wide range of activities in this facility provides many new and different situations for our student employees to learn and grow by.
At the present time, the Ford Fieldhouse maintains partnerships with many area businesses for the purpose of providing their employees with wellness programs at our facility. This program is on going and is meeting with a great deal of success.
In July of 1996, the Grand Rapids Community College Campus Police Department began keeping statistics on all of the College facilities. This is being done in compliance with federal guidelines. The reader will note that given the intense level of activity taking place in and around the Ford Fieldhouse, we have been able to provide an extremely safe environment for our students, staff, and health club members. During the period of July 1, 2002 through June 30, 2003, the Ford Fieldhouse experienced the following numbers of incidents.
