Here you'll find answers to the questions most frequently asked about the lab.
How do I get tutoring in the Biology Learning Center?
The Biology Learning Center works on a first-come, first-served basis. You do not need an appointment to work with a tutor. Feel free to approach them with your question or raise your hand.
You can identify a tutor by the Ask A Tutor sign as well as their nametag.
Do I need to use a tutor to study in the Biology Learning Center?
No. The atmosphere in the Biology Learning Center is very relaxed, and many students use the Biology Learning Center just for studying or working on a computer. Feel free to stop in and check it out!
Isn't the Biology Learning Center only for students who are struggling in class?
Not at all. In fact, students who are doing very well in their classes use the Biology Learning Center because it is a great place to study, meet with other students, and use the learning resources such as models, microscope slides, and computers.
What do I do if I want a one-on-one tutor that I can meet with every week?
One-on-one tutoring is available through the Academic Support Center on the 2nd floor of the Library. You can visit them or call 234-4149 to set up a one-on-one tutoring session.
Do you offer any study groups?
We offer tutor-led workshop sessions for both BI 101, BI 117, and BI 121 in the Biology Learning Center. Please stop in for information on how to sign-up!
Can you help me with my graded assignments and take-home tests?
While we are unable to answer questions from graded assignments, we are happy to help you with understanding the concept behind the question.
Can I check-out the resources in the Biology Learning Center?
The resources in the Biology Learning Center are to be used in the lab only and cannot leave the room. This is so that our resources are available to all students at all times. Models and posters on the back wall can be taken to your table for closer examination. Books and CDs from the Biology Learning Center resource room must be checked-out with a Raider Card (for use in the Biology Learning Center only).
Does the Biology Learning Center have computers and a printer?
No, but the Science Computer Lab is located right next door. The computers are on a first-come, first-served basis for students working on their academics. If you are not working on class work and the lab is busy, you may be asked to log-off. The printer costs 10 cents per page and can be paid for through the Raider Card Print Service icon on the desktop. Additionally, if you need content tutoring in biology on a computer, a tutor can be requested.
If I miss one of my scheduled lab classes, can I come to the Biology Learning Center to make up that lab?
The Biology Learning Center provides many of the same models, microscope slides, and posters used in your lab classes, but there are activities associated with a lab exercise that must be performed in the lab class. The Biology Learning Center is not intended as a place to make up missed lab exercises, but rather a place to further study items covered in your lab class.
