Academic Governing Council
Fall 2005 Vote
At the end of the Fall 2005 semester, all full time faculty and academic administrators were asked to vote on the proposed amendments to the Academic Senate bylaws, including creation of the Academic Governing Council. An 88% yes vote carried the motion. Here's the vote:
95 Yes
13 No
88 percent yes votes carried the motion. Here's some of the comments that were made.
1. Will the Deans Council continue to meet in its current format?
2. I think this is a tremendous advance.
3. While the proposed changes have some advantages I feel that the Senate is a young organization and has worked, albeit slow. A new orgization will have the same "growing pains" and the faculty voice will be lost again for a few years.
4. Fabulous idea and long overdue!
5. A wonderful opportunity for the College!
6. I believe that the academic senate has not been in existence long enough to measure its usefulness. Perhaps the combination of both faculty and administration was not the best design, but when the senate has weighed in on an issue it has been thoughtful and has made a difference in keeping with its constitution. This change does not look practical and has the same voices speaking, voices who already are heard through the CLC, etc.
7.There are so many meetings at this College. I don't see how adding more people and more meetings is going to result in any efficiency. I also fear the open dialogue among faculty members in the Senate will be lost.
8. Don’t faculty and administrators already work collaboratively? The problem is we keep spinning our wheels while the rest of the college makes the decisions that alter our lives. If this was a reorganization of CLC that gave faculty a real say in the decisions of the college, I’d support it with all my energy; this does not do that.
9. I see this as an ongoing pilot project towards better communication, organization, and new and improved decisive decision making.
10. I truly hope that this is the "pilot" semester and that all will take a look at it and make any needed modifications. I have been led to believe that there will be another vote after the pilot.
