Crime Prevention Tips

  • Copy all model and serial numbers for electronic devices and store in a safe place
  • Register bicycles with your local Fire Department and copy the serial number for identification purposes.  The serial number can normally be found on the bottom of the frame near the pedals.
  • Do not leave valuables unattended
  • Pick a page number in your textbooks and write your name on that specific page to later identify your book if it is stolen.
  • Do not leave electronic devices, I.e. GPS, radar, iPods, etc.., in plain view in your vehicle; lock them up in the trunk or glove compartment.
  • Do not carry social security cards and birth certificates in your purse or wallet.  Your identity can be stolen with these items.
  • Do not attach your PIN numbers to your debit/credit cards.
  • When utilizing the Ford Fieldhouse, be sure to lock all valuables in a locked locker, available in the locker rooms.
  • Be aware of “current” scams in the area.  Any questions call GRCC PD.  I.e. giving access to ATM cards to strangers, loaning money to strangers, giving rides to strangers whose vehicle is supposedly broken down or out of service.  Call GRCC Police and we will assist them.
  • Lock vehicles at all times
  • Park vehicles in a well-lit area.
  • Walk to vehicle with another student if and when possible.
  • Do not talk on the cell phone, or text, while walking to your vehicle.  Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Avoiding wearing headphones when moving about the campus, or area.
  • When possible, be sure that your laptop is password protected.  Pawnshops will not accept laptops w/o passwords or access to a hard drive. This password makes it more difficult for thieves to steal and sell your items.
  • Write down all credit card numbers and customer service phone numbers in case they are stolen.  If stolen, cancel cards immediately.
  • Report all suspicious subjects and occurrences to GRCC police immediately.
  • Have your door keys ready; carry them in your pockets, not buried in a purse.
  • Stay in well-lit areas when at all possible when you are walking from one point to another.
  • Make eye contact with people when walking, but avoid responding to conversation from strangers.
  • Hold purses and other items securely and closely to your body when walking.
  • If you must be in an isolated area (e.g., working or studying alone in labs or offices) lock the doors and tell a friend or the Police Department where you are and when you plan to leave.
  • Know the location of campus emergency telephones on routes to and from campus destinations.
  • Never leave personal property (e.g., book bags, laptop computers, etc.) unattended.
  • Use the emergency telephones (blue light phones) throughout campus to report suspicious activity or if you feel threatened or uncomfortable.
  • If your purse or backpack is snatched, don’t fight it. There is nothing in it that can’t be replaced. It is not worth getting hurt over.
  • Be careful when people in a car stop and ask you for directions. Always reply from a distance and never get too close to the car.
