After Training 10,000 in Motorcycle Safety GRCC Instructor Gets National Acclaim

Steven Lick, coordinator of the Motorcycle Safety Training Program at Grand Rapids Community College, has been awarded The 2011 Outstanding Career and Technical Educator by SkillsUSA.
 
“In the 10 years he has overseen the program, more than 10,000 motorcyclists have been trained to be safe riders.  Further proof of Steve’s passion to help others be the best they can be,” said SkillsUSA Executive Director, Tim Lawrence, to a crowd of 14,000 at the group’s 47th National Leadership and Skills Conference held in Kansas City, MO.

Lick, who retired in 2007 after 16 years as a graphic arts instructor at the Allegan Area Technical Center.   He has kept active in SkillsUSA as a state certified trainer, presenter, state conference team member and one of the members of the Quiz Bowl National Education Team.

“This recognition was long deserved,” said GRCC Director of Workforce Training, Julie Parks. “Steve’s commitment to engage student learning, motorcycle safety, and community outreach all over southwest Michigan has had a major impact in the region.  Students, and the motorcycle coaches, give him and the program high marks every year.  We are very proud to work with a man of Steve’s character and to see him receive national recognition for all his good service.”

SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, instructors, and industrial leaders that works to ensure the U.S. has a skilled workforce.  Originally founded under the name Vocational Industrial Clubs of America in 1965, now serves more than 320,000 high school, college and post-secondary students by teaching leadership, citizenship and character development to complement technical skills training.

Grand Rapids Community College, established in 1914, offers opportunities for over 32,000 students annually in degree courses, certification and training programs, workshops and personal enrichment classes. Training Solutions, a GRCC Workforce Development department, has trained over 8,100 students in specialized training programs in 2009-10. GRCC holds classes on the downtown Grand Rapids campus as well as several additional locations throughout Kent and Ottawa counties.
