GRCC and “Ice Brigade” to Unveil Ice Sculpture for ArtPrize

Grand Rapids Community College and the Food Network’s “Ice Brigade” duo of Randy Finch and Derek Maxfield (who have finished in the top 25 and top 50 in the past two ArtPrize competitions, respectively) have partnered to create a special ice sculpture that will be on display at The BOB in downtown Grand Rapids during ArtPrize. The piece will be unveiled September 9, 2011 at the Ice Gurus Studios, 188 Wealthy St SW, # 4 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Maxfield is an alumnus of GRCC, and both he and Finch regularly employ and help educate students on ice sculpting. 

“This was a natural fit for us – the Ice Gurus’ long-time connection to the college gives us the opportunity to show the community what we offer,” said Raul Alvarez, GRCC’s director of communications. “And GRCC has wanted to engage more with the ArtPrize crowds that converge on downtown during this popular community event - it’s our way of taking the College to the ArtPrize community.“

Grand Rapids Community College, established in 1914, offers opportunities for over 32,000 students annually in degree courses, certification and training programs, workshops and personal enrichment classes. GRCC holds classes on the downtown Grand Rapids campus as well as several additional locations throughout Kent and Ottawa counties. 

Ice Gurus Randy Finch and Derek Maxfield of Ice Sculptures limited create ice sculpture displays for birthdays, graduations, christmas parties, and weddings. They also do live ice sculpting performances and make sculptures for winter festivals such as the Rockford Ice Festival. They have been featured on several national television shows including the Today show and "Ice Brigade" on the Food Network.
