GRCC Awards Second Annual Excellence Award to Adjunct Faculty Member

Grand Rapids Community College announced the recipient of their Excellence in Teaching by  Adjunct Faculty Award at their Adjunct Appreciation Dinner August 23.  Dawn Cheikh, adjunct professor of French and Arabic, was presented with the award.

While GRCC’s Excellence in Education Award for faculty and staff has been in place for several years, the Excellence in Teaching by Adjunct Faculty Award is only in its second year.  It was established in 2010 to honor a Grand Rapids Community College adjunct faculty member for his or her outstanding teaching and commitment to student success.  The distinction comes with a $750 cash award and a commemorative figurine trophy.

“Dawn is one of those individuals who is actively involved in her department, is not afraid to take on challenges and holds her students accountable so that they can be in the best position to learn – she truly epitomizes teaching excellence,” wrote one of her nominating faculty colleagues.

Cheikh has been with GRCC’s Language and Thought department since 2004, and is, according  to one colleague who nominated her,  “one of the most considerate people I know…When the rest of us are frustrated with the way things work sometimes, this person approaches these moments with a certain civility that the rest of us only aspire to possessing.”   In one letter in support of her nomination, she is described as “an outstanding professor who continually strives to improve her teaching to better her students’ learning.”  Cheik, a native of Grand Rapids, earned her B.A. in French and Music at Aquinas College and her M.A. in French from Middlebury College.

The Adjunct Appreciation Dinner and award ceremony is sponsored by the Office of Academic and Student Affairs.
