GRCC Celebrates GED and ESL Graduation - More than 300 Expected to Be Recognized on June 7

Grand Rapids Community College’s two Learning Corners, West Side Learning Corner and the Learning Corner at Wealthy, will hold their annual joint graduation ceremony on Thursday, June 7, 2012 at 7p.m. This year’s event will be held at Ford Fieldhouse on the GRCC campus. This joint graduation ceremony is for students who have completed their high school equivalency test (GED) and for those who have attained the “Level of Proficiency” in their English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. The event is being held in partnership with Lake Michigan Credit Union and Huntington Bank – both businesses have been longtime community partners active in helping students reach their goals. "This is a very special time for all of us at the community learning corners as we join in celebrating a very important achievement in the lives of these students,” said David Selmon, Director of GRCC’s Learning Corners. “We are thrilled to be graduating and recognizing over three hundred students this year.” Highlighting this year’s graduation ceremony as keynote speaker will be Keenan Wade, Administrative Manager, Workforce Development Agency for the state of Michigan. In his capacity at the State, Wade oversees worker certification, GED programs and youth services. GRCC Board of Trustees Chairperson Richard Verburg will serve as emcee for this year’s graduation ceremony. GRCC’s Learning Corners, located at 1154 Wealthy St. SE and 665 Seward St. NW, have a distinctive purpose: to provide access to higher education to adults who may not think of themselves as “college material,” but are comfortable in a friendly location within their neighborhood. The staff at these neighborhood learning facilities provide individuals with personalized attention, help them get acclimated to the school experience and prepare them to eventually attend college classes on the GRCC campus. Grand Rapids Community College, established in 1914, offers opportunities for over 30,000 students annually in degree courses, certification and training programs, workshops and personal enrichment classes. GRCC holds classes on the downtown Grand Rapids campus as well as several additional locations throughout Kent and Ottawa counties.
