Oct. 2, 2013 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Grand Rapids Community College unveiled its Meijer Center for Business Studies during an afternoon ribbon-cutting ceremony today. The space was dedicated in honor of Meijer for its continued engagement with GRCC Business students and its support of the college.

“We are pleased to be here today dedicating a space that will further allow Grand Rapids Community College to enhance Business education for its students,” said GRCC President Dr. Steven C. Ender. “Meijer has long been a champion of the college and its educational initiatives, and we are grateful for their continued support.”

Established during the college’s 1917-18 academic year with 10 courses, GRCC’s Business Department has grown exponentially to today offer 10 programs of study that serve nearly 2,700 students each year. Students may study to earn transfer credits, associate degrees and certificates.

In addition to the Meijer family’s engagement with GRCC, Meijer employees have been actively involved with the college’s Business Department, serving in roles from guest lecturers to adjunct faculty. Meijer employees also have served roles on programmatic advisory committees to share their expertise and shape the development of GRCC’s Business curriculum. Also, course field trips, internships and co-op experiences have been part of GRCC’s and Meijer’s robust collaborative efforts.

“We take great pride in our partnership with GRCC,” said Hank Meijer, co-chairman of Meijer Inc. “We work with GRCC and all our community partners to keep West Michigan a vital and promising economic region to grow a career, own a business and raise a family.”

Located on the second floor of the college’s Main Building, the Meijer Center for Business Studies features:

  • Three new computer labs with double projection images, and one “learn lab” room with triple projection images and powered tables for laptop use
  • Two break-out, small group work spaces, and one large collaboration suite for class projects
  • One board room for shared use and professional simulation activities
  • A business center for faculty use
  • Hallway seating areas.

“Grand Rapids Community College has been providing educational opportunities for West Michigan residents for nearly 100 years,” said GRCC Board of Trustees Chair Bert Bleke. “The Meijer Center for Business Studies is a fantastic addition to the college’s repertoire as it prepares for the next 100 years of educational excellence.”

Grand Rapids Community College, established in 1914, offers opportunities for more than 30,000 students annually in degree courses, certification and training programs, workshops, and personal enrichment classes. GRCC holds classes on a downtown Grand Rapids campus, as well as several locations throughout Kent and Ottawa counties.
