Grand Rapids Community College has named former college provost and executive vice president, Dr. Velvie Green, as Emeritus Faculty/Administrator for 2012. The award is given at the end of each academic year to a retiree for outstanding work at the college, and will be presented at this year’s commencement on April 27.
Dr. Green began her 28-year career at GRCC by teaching Office Administration in the Business Department. Her leadership eventually earned her the Business Division Chair, later becoming Assistant Dean and Associate Provost and Dean for the School of Workforce Development. She retired as Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs.
“Velvie is one of those individuals who inspires and empowers people, and who models integrity and excellence while asking the same of others,” said Dr. Gilda Gely, GRCC Provost. “Her passion for student success, innovative ways of thinking and diversity have contributed in so many ways to our college’s tradition of excellence.”
After earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a Master’s degree in business education from Western Michigan University, Green went on to attain her Ph.D. in higher education administration from Michigan State University.
Among the many notable accomplishments listed in her nomination form, Dr. Green is credited with working to create the college’s Academic Governing Counsel, which helps guide and create academic policy, and leading GRCC’s 10-year quest for the Michigan Quality Leadership Award.
Dr. Green was known throughout her career for her integrity and as a champion for diversity. She is a lifetime member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women.
“Velvie is a true leader - she is truly deserving of this award,” said Dr. Gely.
