April 1, 2013 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Grand Rapids Community College is pleased to announce the recent hire of Leah Nixon, who joins the college as its Director of Communications.

Nixon brings eight years of university communications experience to GRCC, having served as Director of Marketing Client Services and Assistant Director for News Services at Ferris State University. In her new role, Nixon will develop a more comprehensive communications campaign, working to build on the college's profile through focused publications.

"Grand Rapids Community College makes an excellent education accessible and affordable," said Nixon. "This is an especially exciting time to share all of the great opportunities GRCC offers local students." Founded in 1914, the college will celebrate its centennial in the 2014-15 academic year.

Nixon also will draw on her extensive Ferris State campus committee involvement and five years of journalism experience with the Big Rapids Pioneer to work closely with partners across the GRCC campus and in local media, promoting the college's many educational and community-building initiatives, as well as the work of the Grand Rapids Community College Foundation to raise financial support for scholarships and instructional development programs.

Nixon will begin work at GRCC on April 22. She earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Ferris State University in 2008 and a B.A. in Journalism and Spanish from Central Michigan University in 2000.

Grand Rapids Community College, established in 1914, offers opportunities for over 30,000 students annually in degree courses, certification and training programs, workshops and personal enrichment classes. GRCC holds classes on the downtown Grand Rapids campus as well as several additional locations throughout Kent and Ottawa counties.
