Grants

FACULTY RESEARCH

Deadline

We will be accepting applications for these grants until March 17, 2006.

Purpose

The purpose of these grants is to provide GRCC faculty with resources to investigate questions about their own practice of teaching and the impact of this work on student learning. This process was developed this Fall semester by a team of faculty and administrators and uses the Innovation grant funding. All proposed research must be connected to new and innovative ways to approach classroom practices and student learning. Grants will not pay for conference attendance or professional development but may be awarded in conjunction with other grants (i.e. IIPD).

Proposals

Each proposal will include the following:

  • A clear research statement.
  • A brief background on the area of research and the question. Include a brief review of research and some theoretical framework.
  • How the research connects to classroom practices with potential for enhancing student learning.
  • A statement why this research question is important to the researcher and to GRCC.
  • Research methodology and a timeline.
  • Measurable outcomes.
  • Resources needed (materials, technology, local travel, individual time, time from others, etc).

Process

Research projects typically would extend beyond one semester. Here is an outline of the current porcess:

  • The Institute releases a Request For Proposal (RFP) to GRCC Faculty.
  • Proposals will be reviewed by the Institute Staff.
  • If needed, faculty will be contacted for clarifications or enhancements of the proposals.
  • All proposals will be presented to Deans.
  • Deans will select awardees. The main criterion that will be used is the potential for the classroom practice being researched to positively impact student learning.
  • Awardees will be given a stipend in support of their work.
  • Awardees may also have access to mentors or support staff in identified areas of need.

NOTE: Key support will be provided as needed around specific process steps (e.g. writing of the actual grant or training on action research).

Activities

Awardees will begin their research. During this time the researchers are expected to engage in the following activities beyond the research itself:

  • Provide periodic updates to the Institute.
  • Meet as a cohort with all researchers receiving grants in a given year.
  • Practice action research as a form of self reflection, evaluation, and learning.

Completion

Upon completion of the research, the awardees will perform the following:

  • Write a written report on the results of the project based on the original proposal.
  • Write a personal reflection on his or her experience in the research.
  • Share the results of his or her research with the college. The Learning Academy may provide assistance in this area if appropriate.

If you have questions about this grant, we will be holding two informational meetings on February 13 at 3:00 in 133 CSC and February 15 at 4:00 in 133 CSC. Should you not be able to attend the meetings, you may also contact Patti Trepkowski or or Frank Conner directly.
