National Association of Foreign Student Advisers/Association of International Educators NAFSA)

NAFSA serves international educators and their institutions and organizations by setting standards of good practice, providing training and professional development opportunities, providing networking opportunities, and advocating for international education.  NAFSA offers a variety of grants for faculty.

West Michigan Institute for International and Intercultural Education (MIIIE)

MIIIE  is a self-funded consortium of two-year colleges located in the Midwest region. Its primary objective is to support curriculum and professional development by organizing curriculum workshops, fall and spring conferences, overseas projects for faculty and students, assistance with grant development, provide faculty mentoring and professional networking.

Teach abroad in China

MIIIE is offering a teach abroad opportunity for faculty at three universities in China: Xian International Studies University in Xian, Guangxi Normal University in Guilin, and Bao Ji University in Bao Ji.  For more information, including terms and salary, contact Theo Spyris at tspyris@kvcc.edu or 269- 488-4283 or Aleta Anderson at aanderso@grcc.edu.

Three weekly workshops will be offered at Kalamazoo Valley CC, in Michigan in summer 2009:

  1. Global Poverty and Inequality, Monday-Friday, August 3-7, 2009.
  2. World Food, Water and Energy, Monday-Friday, August 10-14, 2009.
  3. South East Asia, Monday-Friday, August 17-21, 2009.

Each workshop is limited to 15 faculty to undertake curriculum and professional development.

The Midwest Institute is planning for five Fulbright GPA projects to the U.S. Dept. of Education for summer 2009: China, India, Japan-S.Korea, and Malaysia.

Each project will select 15 faculty to participate in the overseas trip and undertake curriculum and professional development. An abstract, application form, and itinerary for the five Fulbright GPA projects will be available in the Projects link of this website by October 31, 2008.

In spring 2009, the Midwest Institute will sponsor two Chinese scholars to offer a tour of lectures (1-2 days per college), along with a traveling exhibit on Chinese Writing and Calligraphy.

The Midwest Institute consortium has signed agreements, which will allow several faculty to teach in China starting in the winter and summer 2009.

Boren Awards/National Security Education Program

Scholarships for study of world regions critical to U.S. interests including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East. Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zeeland are excluded.
