Social Tools and Virtual Worlds
When you hear “Facebook” or “Social Bookmarking” you may think about how we use technology in social settings. When you hear about the virtual worlds in “Second Life” or “Blogs and Wikis”, you may think of what we do at play. However, Grand Rapids Community College is using these tools to assist in teaching and learning. To see what were’ doing, here are some resources worth exploring:
- § National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development – “Grand Rapids Community Colleges Moves Beyond Traditional Web Searching with Blackboard.”
- § Wikis, Blogs & More, Oh My! – Campus Technology Article
- § MySpace for Grown-Ups – Computerworld Magazine Article
- § GRCC Online and Hybrid Certification Course (OHCC) – Syllabus
Our OHCC course allows our faculty to explore emerging technologies like serious gaming and Second Life (scene below).

According to one of our recent participants:
“I have found what I learned in the on-line/hybrid class to be very useful as I integrate Blackboard more and more in my face-to-face CLS 100 class. Still a long way to go to get proficient, but I have really appreciated the windows that the three of you opened during the class.”
