OnlineInstructional Technology

Blackboard

GRCC uses version 8 of the Blackboard ® Learning Management System. In addition to supplementing campus instruction, Blackboard (http://bb.grcc.edu) is the platform for our online and hybrid courses. Many institutions use Blackboard, but Grand Rapids Community College is set apart by the teaching, talent and tools we provide through it!

Wimba Pronto

Wimba Pronto is an instant messaging tool that integrates with Blackboard. Students can use the tool to ask their professor questions or attend “virtual office hours.” This was the highlight of a recent Fox 17 “On Campus” news segment.

The latest version of Wimba Pronto has text chat, audio, video and application sharing. GRCC’s use of this instructional technology has also been highlighted in University Business and on wimba.com

iPhone App

At GRCC, we involve our students in the testing and implementation of instructional technologies. Here’s a quote from a Blackboard Press Release:

“"The application is great for quickly checking Blackboard on the go, and it helps me be more engaged and organized even if I'm away from campus," said Nate Schumacher, a freshman at Grand Rapids Community College in Michigan who participated in the Beta program for the application. "With Blackboard on my iPod touch, I'm checking more often for new grades and updates the same way I check my email. Because it's so accessible, I can see my progress instantly and get feedback from professors on how I'm doing, so it helps make me a better student. This application has great potential. I would definitely recommend it to other students."

Eric Kunnen (Coordinator of Instructional Technologies)

Our own Eric Kunnen is recognized as a national expert in the use and implementation of Blackboard. He has served many years on the exclusive “Ask Dr C” panel and the Blackboard Idea Exchange Steering Committee.

RaiderCard (Transaction System)

Our Raidercard is even integrated with Blackboard. You can learn more by reading this national case study, or watching this short video.
