Where's the library?
The GRCC library is located at 140 Ransom Avenue N.E. between the Music Building and the Applied Technology Center (ATC). It is also known as the Arthur Andrews Memorial Library, the Learning Commons, or the Learning Resource Center. Map

Who do I call for information?

Who can use the library?
Anyone with a photo ID can register to use library services, although some areas and services are reserved for active members of the GRCC Community. Students are automatically registered throughout the semester. Faculty and staff may need to use the registration form linked above. Along with more than 300 other academic and public libraries, we also honor MichiCard.

Where can I park?
The main Bostwick parking ramp is across Ransom Avenue to the west. Raider card parking is also available in the lot at Barclay & Lyon, to the east of the building.

Can I use the phone?
Out of respect for others, please mute the ring of your cell phone while in the library. Use the lobby outside the library to take calls. There's a pay phone directly across from the library entry near the vending machines and one outside the main entrance to the building on the patio.

Where's the bathroom?
Restrooms are inside the library at the east and west sides of both floors.

Do I need a library card?
If you're a GRCC student, your Raider card is your library card. If you're not a student, a card will be issued to you when you register to use the library.

How do I register?
Currently registered students are automatically registered in the library system. If you aren't in the system, present proof of identification to the person at either the Circulation Desk or the Periodicals Desk and they'll enter your registration information into the database.

What if I don't have my ID or my library card?
Your ID/library card facilitates all library transaction processes, so please have it with you.

What services does the library have?
Circulation Desk – first floor beside the library exit.
Reference Desk – first floor immediately inside the entrance.
Student Computers – first & second floors.
Wireless Access – is available on both floors of the library to registered students.
Periodicals Desk – second floor, north wall.
Audio-Visual (A-V) Equipment – first floor, SE corner.
Copiers – first floor, east wall by the Circulation Desk, and second floor, north wall.

When should I ask for help at the Circulation Desk?
The Circulation Desk is where you may check out library materials, retrieve items placed on reserve by instructors, purchase certain instructional media, get headphones to use with the computers or A-V equipment, check out some telecourses, get change, and pay fines. Coffee and snacks are available for purchase.

When should I ask for help at the Reference Desk?
Reference librarians can help you locate resources for your class assignments and research projects. They are at the Reference Desk during all hours the library is open.

What are Reserves?
Materials may be placed on reserve by your instructor to ensure that the whole class will have access to the required readings. Ask for them at the Circulation Desk. They're usually available for two hours and must be used in the library. A few items, however, are open reserve with unique loan periods set by the instructor.

When should I ask for help at the Periodicals Desk?
The Periodicals Desk houses journals, magazines, microforms, career folders, pamphlet files, and newspapers. There, you can get help with the microform reader/printers or ask about interlibrary loan services.

How long can I keep library materials?
Books generally circulate to students for three weeks; loan periods vary for other types of materials. Students are allowed one self-serve renewal through RaiderCat.

How much are overdue fines?
Ten cents per book per day. The maximum fine is $10.00 per item. A lost book is billed for its replacement cost plus a $5 processing fee. For most Reserve materials, including Reserve telecourses, the fines are $.25/hour. Overdue fines of $.10/hour apply to periodicals. Overdue telecourse rentals are $3.00/day.

What should I do if I have a library hold?
If you have overdue materials or more than $2 in library fines, a library hold will be placed in your student record. Contact Circulation at 616.234.3872 or 616.234.3879 for assistance.

How do I check out Reserves?
Tell the Circulation Desk the name of your instructor and the course number, for example, Mitchell-EC251.

How do I check out telecourses?
Ask for the course number and tape number at the Circulation Desk. The Telecourse web page has details.

How do I purchase instructional media?
Copies of some media are available under license agreement with the publisher. Ask for the course and chapter number at the Circulation Desk. A copy will be made for you. Cassette tapes are $1.25; cases are an extra $.25. CDs cost $2.

How do I check out magazines and journals?
Note the name of the periodical along with the issue date and ask for it at the Periodicals Desk. Periodicals are due back before closing the same day. They must be used in the library.

Can I use the photocopiers?
Copies are $.10 per page. Material can be scanned to your email account without charge. Transparency film for the copiers is for sale at the Circulation Desk for an additional $.25

Help! I've never used microforms before.
Ask for help at the Periodicals Desk. Paper copies are $.10 per page.

What magazine titles do you carry?
Use RaiderCat, the online catalog to search for your topic. Link to additional online resources using the WebBuilder button. Alternately, use the Journal List link on the home page and type in the journal title. This will tell you which databases to use to find articles in a publication and whether the journal is online or in the library.

What if I need an article and you don't have a subscription to that periodical?
If we don't have a paper subscription, we may have it online. The Journal List link in the Resources column of the library web page will help you locate content within periodicals. Librarians can help you identify subscriptions owned by partner libraries. You can request articles through interlibrary loan or visit the owning library.

What can I do from home?
Read thousands of online books in RaiderCat or use the NetLibrary and Academic Complete links on the Databases page.

Search for information in reference collections from Gale Virtual Reference Library (Title List), CREDO Reference (Title List), and Oxford Reference (Title List).

Locate complete articles from categories listed on the Databases page.

Check due dates, renew materials, rate materials, set up search alerts for new materials, and read news feeds.

Get Email assistance for your reference questions.

Use a list of internet resources especially selected for GRCC students.

What's MelCat?
MelCat is a statewide service that helps you locate and borrow books that GRCC doesn't own. Always start your search for books in RaiderCat. If the item you want isn't available, click the button that says 'Search MeLCat'. If we have your phone number, you'll be notified when your request arrives. Deliveries usually take from 3 to 5 business days. Please pick them up at the Periodicals Desk.

What's Interlibrary Loan?
Interlibrary Loan allows you to borrow materials our library doesn't own. Several formats may be available. Visit the interlibrary loan web page for details, or ask at the Periodicals Desk. Materials arrive in about 10 days to 2 weeks. Please pick them up at the Periodicals Desk.

How long can I keep Interlibrary Loan materials?
Book loans vary according to the loan rules of the lending library. Copies of articles are yours to keep.

Can I get on the Internet?
LLC computers include both Internet access and Microsoft licensed software. The library has complete wireless coverage, too.

What's the password for InfoTrac?
To use the online databases from off campus, you need to be in the library's database. Phone the Circulation Desk for assistance at 616.234.3872. When you select a database from off campus you should be prompted for your last name & 7-digit Raider ID.

What if I have to prepare a class assignment?
LLC computers offer the Microsoft Office suite under our campus license.

Do I have to be a student to use the computers?
Yes.

I'm not a student. What do I do?
The Applied Technology Center (ATC) next door (south) collects a use fee for non-students.
