INTERLIBRARY BORROWING

Who can borrow?
This service is offered to Grand Rapids Community College students, faculty, emeritus faculty, staff, Ferris State University students on our campus, and our community.

What can be borrowed?
A loan or a copy of any material may be requested from another library although the lending library will decide in each case whether or not a particular item can be provided. Items missing from the college library collections can be borrowed. Photocopy of missing pages from library material can be obtained.

Most libraries will not ordinarily lend the following types of materials:
Rare or valuable material, including manuscripts;
Bulky or fragile items that are difficult or expensive to ship;
Material in high demand at the lending library;
Material with local circulation restriction;
Videos, media, newspapers, pre-1900 material, maps;
Unique material that would be difficult or impossible to replace;
Periodical issues
Textbooks

Borrower’s responsibilities:
An interlibrary borrowing request must be submitted on appropriate forms with complete citation information. Patron record must be entered into the library’s database with student ID number. Include your e-mail address for an additional way of contacting you when material arrives.

For articles, the source of the information/citation must be included. There must be an indication of compliance with the Copyright Law (Title 17, U.S. Code), or the Contu Guidelines where required. Payment must be made for photoduplication or lending charges incurred by faculty and administrative requests. The borrower will write a check in advance of borrowing, for the full amount the prospective lending libraries will charge, above $12 per request, at a limit of 5 charging requests per semester. Students will be allowed one charging request per semester, up to $12. Full payment must be made in advance for charging requests to follow. (GRCC borrows primarily from libraries that don't charge for service.) ILL service will be suspended for those who abuse the privilege.

INTERLIBRARY LENDING

Materials that ordinarily circulate to GRCC library users may be sent out or photocopied for interlibrary loan.

Borrowing library’s responsibilities:
The borrowing library must submit requests in standard format as prescribed by the documents described above. Requests are received via OCLC, fax, and ALA. Reciprocal charges apply. (We charge what you would charge us.) IFM preferred. No charges for LVIS libraries.

Videos must be returned in boxes or bubble bags. Service will be provided as quickly and economically as possible. A 2-3 day turnaround can usually be expected.
