In 1983, the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. became an observed federal holiday. Grand Rapids Community College has been at the forefront of commemorating the legacy of Dr. King since 1986.
In subsequent years, GRCC partnered with Grand Valley State University and Davenport University to form the Inter-Campus Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration. The two-day event takes place on three campuses and focuses on contemporary Civil Rights issues, reflects on Dr. King’s expansive writings and evolving ideology about justice, and encourages people into action through public service.

Over sixty scholarships have been awarded to high school seniors during this annual celebration.
Steps to Apply
- A typed, one-page essay that addresses the following topic: "Why is attending College important?"
- One written letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, coach, or mentor.
- A high school transcript with six semesters and a cumulative GPA of 2.0.

Eligibility
- Graduating senior who identifies as a member of a historically underserved and underrepresented group.
- Enrolled in Kent Intermediate School District.
- Involved in community service or activities in support of diversity and inclusion.
- Must be accepted into Grand Rapids Community College with a minimum grade point average of 2.0.
