Malcolm Brannen
Malcolm
Brannen, Director of the Chamber Orchestra and String Ensembles
graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelor of Music degree
in violin performance. While serving as violin soloist with the U. S.
Navy Band in Washington, DC, and first violinist with the U. S. Navy
String Quartet, he earned a Masters Degree from Catholic University of
America, also in violin performance. Malcolm then studied toward a
doctorate degree at the University of Iowa. After moving to Grand
Rapids he attended Aquinas College to earn a Bachelor of Music
Education degree.
In 1974 Malcolm was hired by Grand Rapids Public Schools to develop a special program for gifted and talented music students. In 1988 Malcolm became Coordinator of Music for Grand Rapids Public Schools. Having taught as adjunct faculty since 1986, Malcolm joined the college as full-time faculty in 1992 to develop the Preparatory Program in the Arts, now the Arts Outreach Program, for which he serves as Coordinator and teaches in its Suzuki violin program. In addition to teaching private violin and viola, he frequently presents clinics and workshops for area string educators and students.
