Mary Scanlan, Ph.D.
Mary
Scanlan received her Doctorate in Piano Pedagogy from the University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and degrees in Piano from the University
of Wisconsin and the University of Iowa. Since 1988 she has taught
piano and music history at Grand Rapids Community College in Grand
Rapids, Michigan.
Professor Scanlan is active as soloist, chamber musician, vocal coach and accompanist. In this latter capacity she toured Europe in 1986 and has performed for the national conventionsof the National Association of Teachers of Singing and the National Federation of Music Clubs. She has also participated in the Yale in Norfolk Summer Music Festival of Music by Women Composers. As a harpsichordist she has performed with the Chicago Civic Orchestra and the Chicago Chamber Orchestra.
Dr. Scanlan has been the recipient of several grants, including the National Endowment for the Humanities, to assist in her research of music by women and African-American composers. She frequently presents both topics in lecture/recitals. Professor Scanlan is a frequent adjudicator and clinician and served as President of the Grand Rapids Piano Forum (MTNA). In 1996 & 1997 she was voted Forum Teacher of the Year. In the summer of 1997 she was awarded a Fulbright grant for study in Romania & Bulgaria. She has also performed lecture/recitals in the Czech Republic, Hungary, and for the National Convention of MTNA in Dallas (1997).
