Police to Begin Ticketing Students Blocking Intersections and Traffic Lanes

December 5, 2003 - To be in compliance with City Traffic Ordinances, all intersections and traffic lanes on or adjacent to GRCC’s downtown campus must be kept clear of stopped or “standing” vehicles at all times.

Beginning with Winter 2004 semester, City of Grand Rapids Police will begin ticketing cars blocking intersections or “standing” in a traffic lane.

An example: Cars waiting to turn left onto Fountain St. from Division can not wait on Division until there is room for them to turn into the line. This blocks at least one lane on Division to “normal” traffic. You can not pull into the line on Fountain St. and sit with your motor running as the line advances into a ramp entrance. This blocks at least one lane on Fountain St.

Plan ahead! Tickets will cost you $65 plus 2 points on your drivers license!

Raiders Bring Home the Championship!

June 3, 2003 - The GRCC Raiders baseball team had to win six straight elimination-round games to take home the title and that’s just what they did. This is the third national championship trophy that GRCC has seen in the last eight years. What makes this win so special is the way the team proved themselves. The Raiders are the first team in the 11-year history of the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II to bounce back from an opening-round loss to win the World Series.

"We though we had what it would take to win, but then we had that setback,” said sophomore Ryan Lyster. “All we knew was we had to keep the guns (offense) going. If we could hit, we knew the pitching would keep us in it.”

(Click for larger image)

(Click for larger image)

(Click for larger image)

Lyster was not the only teammate worried about an untimely exit from the tournament. With six errors in their opening game 12-8 loss against Mercer County, the team had to collect their thoughts.

“This is a group that can put bad ball behind them,” said GRCC coach Doug Wabeke. The team proved his words to be true. The Raiders came back to outscore six teams 61-23. The key to their success was determination, confidence and taking it one game at a time.

“From Day One, our goal was winning the league and World Series,” said Kurt Lauscher. Lauscher, starting his third game in seven days, went the distance for his team. He allowed only two runs on four hits with eleven strikeouts.

Congratulations to Coach Doug Wabeke, his staff and the 32 dedicated young men who once again have shown the world that GRCC in not just elite academically, but also athletically!

GRCC’s Business & Technical Training department has a new director!

June 3, 2003 - Recent restructuring changes in GRCC's Business & Technical Training department prompted a search was to find a new executive director. The reorganization of programs in the ATC looked toward the future, toward growth for both students and the community. Looking to expand and build on the manufacturing client base, the college sought out someone who could help it become involved with health care services and other technology-related areas.

Andy Bowne’s credentials were right on the mark. Bowne, the new executive director of workforce training and economic development, comes to us from Shape Corporation, where he was the training and organizational development manager. Prior to that he worked for the Association of Commerce and Industry in Grand Haven, going up through the ranks from training and education director, to operations officer, to executive director. Andy has his hands full both inside, and outside, the office.

GRCC Automotive Technology Program Receives NATEF Certification

April 8, 2003 - The Automotive Technology Program, housed at the new Tassell M-TEC, has received national program certification from the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF).

This process has taken two of our faculty, Randy Lee and David Folkert, two years to complete and included a revision of the Associate and Certificate degree program's curriculum and designing the new M-TEC facility including equipment to meet the national standards. Additionally, the program advisory committee was also very involved with this process.

Being NATEF certificated requires the college to teach the most current skills / tasks required to be an Automotive Technician. This level of program certification will help GRCC program graduates secure quality employment.

Another advantage to NATEF certification is that most major auto manufacturers require it in order for an institution to receive donations. These donations can include automobiles used for student lab projects, automotive components, and grants.

GRCC's NATEF certification requires that the program submit a compliance report in 2 ½ years, and will require renewal in 5 years.
