Increase Volunteer Capacity with Service Learning Grant
March 5, 2008 - GRCC’s Academic Service-Learning Center, the
Aquinas College Community Leadership Program, and the Kent County
Mentoring Collaborative (KCMC) have received a $5,000 grant from the
Volunteer Centers of Michigan/Michigan Campus Compact (VCM/MCC) to
support mentor recruitment. The “Making the Mentoring Connection
Project” will increase the capacity of KCMC to recruit, train, and
retain mentors for its member organizations in the Kent County area by
building its identity and creating a plan and materials for mentor
recruitment.
In the Winter, 2008 semester, students in GRCC Instructor Holly Hoare’s Sustainability course will participate in an Academic Service-Learning project to create a strategic outreach plan for mentor recruitment for KCMC and recruiting materials for local businesses and college students, faculty, and staff. The grant is renewable for three years.

Annual Diversity Conference Cancelled
February 7, 2008 - The Diversity Conference scheduled for Thursday, February 14, 2008 has been cancelled due to low registration from area schools. In the past, conference registrations have averaged 250 + participants. The conference has been highly successful for thirteen years and we appreciate all of our scheduled presenters, sponsors and volunteers.
Some of the school representatives have cited the following as factors in the low registrations:
- Budgets - registration fee - transportation.
- Multiple Snow Days already taken - schools reluctant to have students miss additional day.
- Participation in the KISD 9th grade Diversity Initiative - again schools reluctant to have students miss additional day.
