"Manufacturing is Alive and Well" is Message of GRCC Career Day - Event Aims to Link Employees to Prospective Employers

Manufacturing IS alive and well in West Michigan and Grand Rapids Community College is hosting a Manufacturing Career Day to bring together students and the public who are interested in a career in manufacturing, and the employers that need skilled and educated workers.

The free event, open to the public, will be held Monday, November 7, from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. in the Wisner-Bottrall Applied Technology Center on GRCC’s main downtown campus.

“We keep hearing that manufacturing is dead, when in reality it is still very much alive,” said Mike Kiss, head of GRCC’s Manufacturing Department, whose team has spent weeks planning this event.   “The difference today is that manufacturing has changed, and now requires different sets of skill and education levels.”

According to Kiss, employers today “need workers with specific, higher level skills these days, and those individuals that hope to work have to know what training to get and where to get it.”

Attendees will have the chance to meet with prospective employers to discuss a career in modern manufacturing in addition to learning about employment at specific companies.  GRCC professors will be on hand to discuss degrees and certifications available in the manufacturing field, and attendees will also have an opportunity to participate in a panel discussion with some of the area's top employers about the opportunities available in manufacturing in West Michigan.

“The face-to-face connection on Manufacturing Career Day will be extremely valuable for current GRCC students and other attendees as they will get a true sense of what types of jobs are available, and what training and education is necessary to land that job,” said Kiss.

Companies scheduled to attend GRCC’s Career Manufacturing Day include:
