Welcome to the Older Learner Center

The Aging Revolution
America is aging at an increasing rate. Since
1960 the overall U.S. population increased by 45 percent; persons 65 and older
increased by 100 percent; and persons 85 and older increased by 274 percent.
With the addition of 77 million Baby Boomers born between 1946 and 1964, the
oldest of which began turning 60 at the rate of 10,000 per day in 2006, the
aging of America is truly a societal revolution with far-reaching implications.
The Older Learner Center
In an attempt to help prepare and educate our community regarding this Aging
Revolution, Grand Rapids Community College created the Older Learner Center. The
main goal of the Older Learner Center is to meet the educational needs of an
aging society through:
- Outreach activities within the community including a wide variety of educational programming; public events and forums; training of aging network professionals; publication of written materials; and dissemination of various other educational materials regarding successful aging.
- Development of educational curriculum and programs for training the gerontologist of tomorrow.
- Leadership development, civic engagement, and training for area seniors.
- Life enrichment and other lifelong learning opportunities for baby boomers and older persons.
