The Successful Aging video series, originally developed by the Grand Rapids Community College Older Learner Center and Media Technologies Department for television broadcast, was designed in response to the educational needs of older adults, their families, caregivers, and a rapidly Aging Society. This national award winning television series is now available for purchase on video from Aquarius Health Care Media. These educational videos are appropriate for use in classrooms, senior centers, and churches, as well as with community and civic groups.

Whether eight or eighty one can improve their health. Let’s face it, everyone wants to look better, feel better and live longer. This SUCCESSFUL AGING video program provides information and advice on how proper fitness and nutrition can improve one’s life as they age; including practical suggestions on how everyone, regardless of income, can develop an exercise program, eat nutritiously, and enjoy themselves while doing both.

A survey from the National Family Caregivers Association shows that the number of people who provided care for an older relative or friend during the past year to be a sobering 54 million. This represents over 26% of the adult population in the United States, and means that you have a better than one in four chance that someday you will be a caregiver. This SUCCESSFUL AGING video program helps us to explore the mind of family caregivers by hearing their stories of pain, joy, depression, devotion and fulfillment in the caregiving role. Adapting Homes to Successfully Age in Place (27 minutes – 2003)
Older adults often live in older homes in need of significant repair and/or modification. Many homes lack the functional design needed to accommodate for the losses frequently experienced by older adults. Since most older persons wish to remain in their own home it is important to know how to adapt the home environment to successfully age in place. This SUCCESSFUL AGING video program provides important information and practical advice on adapting homes to successfully age in place including tips on lifetime home design and adaptation, as well as on-camera demonstration of these design elements in home building.
Pain Management & Coping (approximately 30 minutes – 2003)
Some 86 million Americans suffer from some form of chronic pain. Throughout the ages mankind has wrestled with understanding sources of pain and how to relieve it. Pain has always been a part of the human experience and throughout human history scholars and physicians have sought to explain it and, more importantly, to treat it. There is no good reason, regardless of age or illness, why people today should live and suffer with pain. This SUCCESSFUL AGING video program provides information and practical advice on the causes of pain and how to lessen the suffering caused by chronic pain. This is illustrated through a series of candid interviews in which individuals attempting to live with chronic pain share their emotional struggle with depression, and the pursuit of successful treatment; and professional pain management specialists sharing hope now available through treatment.

America is a death denying society that often does not formally prepare individuals to deal with death and dying on personal and emotional levels. Palliative care is a philosophy of care for terminally ill patients, which assures the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual comfort of the dying patient and their family. This SUCCESSFUL AGING video program provides information and practical advice on palliative care for the dying patient and their family. This is accomplished through a variety of candid and emotional interviews with medical personnel, hospice care workers, dying patients, and families. From tears, to courage, to hope and acceptance this video illustrates well how to relate to the dying.
