TWELVE HIGH ACHIEVERS FROM KISD HIGH SCHOOLS
RECEIVE NEW GRCC DEANS’ SCHOLARSHIP

June 22, 2009 Grand Rapids, MI – A dozen outstanding graduates from nine area high schools have been awarded $2500 scholarships to Grand Rapids Community College. That amount can finance two semesters of full-time classes. All 12 students have accepted the scholarships and are enrolled.

To qualify for this new “Deans’ Scholarship,” an applicant had to be a high achieving, in-district high school graduate this year with a minimum GPA of 3.5 and an ACT composite score of 26 or higher. The recipients must be full-time students at GRCC for each semester.

The fund for the Deans’ Scholarship will allow twelve new students to receive scholarships next year as well.

In 2007, the GRCC provost challenged the deans to offer more summer classes than in previous summer sessions in order to serve more students. The revenue resulting from their success was given back to them to use in a way that would support the college’s mission. Their idea was to give the funds back to community residents in the form of scholarships.

Students who received the scholarships will be tracked and if the program is successful in retaining and assisting students with achieving their goals, it could become a prototype for an endowment.
