GRCC BOARD NAMES NEW PRESIDENT

3:02 PM January 29, 2009 Grand Rapids, MI - At an open deliberation in Board Chambers today the Grand Rapids Community College Trustees voted unanimously to nominate Dr. Steven Ender as President of the college. Dr. Ender, currently President of Westmoreland County Community College in Pennsylvania, has accepted the offer.
The board began their deliberations at 1:30 P.M. this afternoon before an audience of approximately 50 college and community members and reached a consensus within an hour.
The trustees, as they were individually polled, remarked repeatedly that we are entering a new time and that GRCC needs the benefit of “fresh eyes” to take the college “to the next level.”
Board Chairperson Gary Schenk commended the college’s search committee for bringing forth two outstanding candidates from which to choose. “We looked at the totality of this individual,” said Schenk.
Board members acknowledged the difficulty of choosing between Ender and the other candidate Mike Paskewicz, superintendent of Adams 12 Five Star Schools in Colorado and formally an administrator with Grand Rapids Public Schools. Schenk said that “Either candidate would be appropriate.”
Twice the audience and Board gave standing ovations to GRCC Interim President Anne Mulder for her guidance and “steady hand” in the search.
Details remain to be worked out about when Dr. Ender will take the president’s seat, when Dr. Mulder will leave her interim position and the terms of the new president’s contract.
Grand Rapids Community College serves 28,000 for-credit and non-credit students this year.
