GRCC NAMES DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS FOR 2009
April 14, 2009 – Grand Rapids, MI - The Grand Rapids Community
College Alumni Board has named Gary Schenk recipient of the college's
Distinguished Alumni Award for 2009. Schenk, a local attorney with a long record
of community involvement, will deliver the main address at GRCC’s graduation
ceremony, May 1.
In making the announcement of the board members’ unanimous vote, Alumni Board
President Walter Lodes, Jr. said, “Gary has a passion for all things involving
Grand Rapids Community College. Whatever the college has needed - from
fundraising to finding a new president - Gary has stepped forward and helped
lead the way.”
Schenk, first elected to the GRCC Board of Trustees in 1997 and current chairperson, has already announced that he will not seek another term. He has publicly referenced his experience as a student at GRCC as a turning point in his life and credited faculty and staff at the college with setting him on a path toward higher education and, ultimately, his career.
“I am grateful to those dedicated professors, that staff and all of their successors. Whatever modest success I may have had in my life, it all began at GRCC,” said Schenk."
Upon learning of the award, he said, “I am well aware of the truly distinguished and deserving GRCC alumni who reside throughout this region and across the United States. To be considered alongside them is a great honor.”
Schenk earned his associate degree from Grand Rapids Junior College, his Bachelor of Arts degree and his Juris Doctor (cum laude) from the University of Michigan. He was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and the Order of the Coif (National Law Honor Society). He is currently Chairman of Schenk & Boncher, P.C. Attorneys at Law.
