GRCC’S HEAD BASKETBALL COACH DAVID SELMON
STEPPING DOWN AFTER 19-YEAR RUN

GRAND RAPIDS, MI, FEBRUARY 11, 2009 - After nearly two decades at the reigns of GRCC Men’s Raider Basketball, David Selmon has decided to call it a career when the 2008-09 season comes to an end.

For the last 18 years, Coach Selmon has left his mark on basketball, not just at GRCC but also in the State of Michigan, a combined record of 413-136 for a winning percentage of .752%, including seven MCCAA conference championships and the 1994-95 NJCAA National runner-up (2nd place), but more than wins and losses, he has influenced countless student athletes.

“That’s what it’s all about, we want to win, but it’s always been about the kids,” said Coach Selmon.

Selmon replaced Granville Brown as coach of the Raiders in 1991, but has a long history with GRCC/GRJC basketball. He was an assistant coach under Brown for three years and also played for legendary Coach Gene Paxton in the early 80s.

According to GRCC Athletic Director Doug Wabeke, “He’s been a Raider almost his whole life and has really done a lot for the Raider basketball program. We’ll miss him and know that his replacement will have a tough act to follow.”

Just before GRCC’s final home game of the season, Wednesday, March 18, a pre-game recognition event will be held for Selmon. Alums, faculty, employees and former players are invited to the Ford Fieldhouse to share in the celebration. The game begins at 7:30 PM.

While Selmon is retiring from coaching, he will continue his full-time position as Assistant Director of Student Life for Grand Rapids Community College.
