GRCC CAPTURES GOLD FOR GREEN
Earns Honor for Remodeling House for Habitat for Humanity

March 26, 2009 – Grand Rapids, MI - GRCC’s Construction Remodeling program, which trains students according to the LEED For Homes certification standards demanded in today’s workplace, has earned a gold certification for going above and beyond standards in the remodeling of a home for Habitat For Humanity of Kent County. It is the first such award GRCC has ever earned for remodeling a home.

“LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards were developed by the United States Green Building Council and judging by today’s heightened attention to sustainability having that certification will be an strong asset for, if not required of, anyone entering the construction field,” says Keith Ferguson, GRCC Construction Remodeling instructor, who oversaw the remodeling class that earned the gold certification.

The Habitat For Humanity of Kent County home is located at 756 Hogan SW in Grand Rapids. Students in GRCC Construction Remodeling and Residential Construction classes remodel or build two Habitat houses annually. As a whole, GRCC’s teams have been given seven LEED awards.
