Jeff Czyzk, Instructor/Adult Education, was selected as one of the Teacher Spotlight winners featured at the 2014 Michigan Adult Education and Training Conference at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel April 28th and 29th.


Dr. Ric Underhile, Associate Dean/Instructional Support and Interdisciplinary Studies, has been accepted into the 2014 Institute for Engaged Leadership in Online Learning (IELOL). The Institute benefits from a wide diversity of input from faculty and online learning professionals from around the world.


Sarah Krajewski, Assistant Professor/Biological Sciences, and students in her Biology 101 for Elementary Educators class took first place at the 2014 Armen Awards. The students created lesson plans — on owls, the life cycle of a bean plant and DNA — for early elementary and middle school children at Immaculate Heart of Mary School.

Second place went to Bethann Talsma, Assistant Professor/Business, and students in her Office Ethics and Etiquette course. They worked with Gilda’s Club to support the overall operations of LaughFest’s central office.

Third place went to Jolanta Lanier, Adjunct/Biological Sciences, and students in her Personal Health course. They teamed up with the American Cancer Society, working with those who support cancer patients and survivors.

The other finalists were:

· Hope Hagan, Adjunct/Business, and her Business and Technical Writing course, which partnered with Covenant House.

· Aleta Anderson, Associate Professor-Department Head/Language & Thought, and her Introductory German course, which worked with Palmer Elementary School.

· Dr. Sherry Knoppers, Associate Professor/Nursing, and her Community Transcultural Nursing course, which partnered with South End Community Outreach Ministry.

· Gayl Beals, Assistant Professor/Automotive, and his Automotive Job Training course, which worked with Mel Trotter Ministries.



Monica Stevens and Barb Bouthillier, Adjuncts/Mathematics, presented One Aspect of Universal Design: Playing Games in Math Class on April 15th as part of the Mathematics Seminar Series. Monica and Barb discussed hands-on activities (games) that can help students learn mathematics.



Susan Murphy, Nursing student, received the Arthur Andrews Award on April 17th during a reception honoring members of Delta Pi Alpha. The Arthur Andrews Award goes to the Delta Pi Alpha student with the highest cumulative grade-point average and the greatest number of honor points.


Arthur Johnson, Educational Support Professional/Provost Office, graduated from Grand Valley State University on April 26th with a master’s degree in education with a concentration in adult and higher education.
