Regional Learning Sites

We are dedicated to providing you with the essential support and assistance so you may provide students with a successful learning experience. This website contains an overview of the locations, FAQ, school closing guidelines, specific semester dates, and details in case of an emergency. We are committed to maintaining instructional excellence at all our learning locations.

The mission of the Regional Learning Centers at Grand Rapids Community College is to meet the learning needs of the community by providing academic opportunities at locations other than downtown Grand Rapids- at a convenient time and location to assist students in attaining their educational goals.

Students

Students who take classes at Off Campus Learning Sites are adult learners, dual-enrolled high school students, new students, etc. Many of our students have work and family responsibilities, as well as a strong commitment to their local communities. Each school district represents a community with its own distinct educational needs. In many cases, a regional learning site class is the first contact a student has with GRCC.

  • Typically have full-time work and family obligations in addition to school demands
  • Slightly older than campus average
  • Are taking classes for promotion at work, transfer, enrichment, etc.
  • Expect instructor to be professional in conduct and appearance
  • Need to know how to contact their instructor outside the classroom
  • Expect a customer-friendly instructional approach including prompt performance feedback
  • Do not always have easy access to usual campus resources
  • View the local community as key resource information
  • Expect classes to go the full time scheduled, without early dismissal

Faculty

Faculty members are identified, supervised and evaluated by the Associate Dean of the Department offering to course. Faculty who work at learning locations make a commitment to serve adult learners with an awareness of the diverse needs of the community.

Academic Outcomes

The same level of academic excellence is expected for students at learning locations as is expected at the downtown campus. It is important that you follow the course outline in the CARP document for the course you are teaching. If you have any questions or need help in designing your course, contact the Department and /or the Learning Academy.

Student Services

Off Campus Learning Sites will provide student support services as needed. Academic advising, tutoring, counseling, registration, and referrals are available at the downtown campus or the www.grcc.edu website. It is recommended that faculty also check out the website to familiarize yourself with the services available.

Facilities

Classes take place in area school district buildings. The high school liaison/personnel contacts at the learning sites may be custodians, building coordinators, clerical assistants, or community education personnel. Building policies and procedures are made available in advance to GRCC. Remember we are guests in these buildings; please return the classroom to the original setup up before you leave.

Building Policies and Procedures

Because we use school district buildings, it's very important to leave a classroom in the condition in which it was found. Food and beverage policies vary from building to building. Please encourage students to follow all school district policies.

First Week Procedures

A staff member will visit your classroom during the first or second class session. We will be there to answer any questions you or your students may have, and see that you have everything needed to begin the semester. The first night of classes is often difficult as students attempt to locate classrooms. Please assist them and be patient with students who may be a little late during the first week.

Copying Services

Large quantities of copying must be done in through department on campus. Minimal copying may be available at select sites via the high school contact.

Locked Out?

Custodians are on duty in the building throughout the evening. They will be able to assist you in case of a lockout. In other cases, call 234-3172 or the Dean on call for the evening 234-4056 until 10:00pm. Please report all lockouts to 234-3172

Class Cancellations

If you need to cancel a class, please contact the absence hotline at (616) 234 3923 and leave the message that you are teaching at an Off Campus Location. The Associate Dean in your department area and the t (616) 234-3172 will try and contact the high school liaison and attempt to notify students.
