Friends and Family Frequently Asked Questions

Where should I park?
Free parking will be available in the Bostwick and Lyon Street Parking Ramps.  A map of the downtown GRCC campus can be found at http://www.grcc.edu/aboutus/maps

What parking arrangements will there be for guests needing mobility assistance?
There will be a drop off location in front of the Ford Fieldhouse on Lyon St.  Cars will then proceed to either the Bostwick or Lyon Street Parking Ramps where handicapped parking can be found.  Once guests are inside, staff will be available to direct them to accessible seating.

What should I know about traffic and street closures?
Lyon St. will close between Ransom and Bostwick Ave. at 5:45 p.m. for the graduates to process into Ford Fieldhouse.  Once the graduates are inside, the street will reopen.  For current street projects and traffic conditions, you may visit: http://www.localconditions.com/weather-grand-rapids-michigan/49501/traffic.php

Are tickets required to attend commencement?
Yes, each person must have a ticket to enter Ford Fieldhouse for the commencement ceremony.  Children under two (2) do not require a ticket.  Your graduate should distribute tickets prior to commencement day.

What if I lose my tickets?
The College will not replace lost or stolen tickets.  You should keep them safe and store them where they can easily be found.

What if I need additional tickets?
Due to space limitations, the College is unable to provide additional tickets.

What time do the doors open for guest seating?
Doors will open at 5:00 p.m. for general admission seating with ticket.  Please be aware the doors will close at 5:45 p.m. for the procession.  Once graduates and faculty are seated, the doors will reopen for guests.

Is the facility air conditioned?
No, Ford Fieldhouse does not have air conditioning and guests should dress for the weather. We do recommend guests wear flat shoes or shoes with a short heel for safety.

What if I need special accommodations?
An interpreter will be available for the hearing impaired, as well as real-time captioning.

Will I be able to videotape or take photos during the ceremony?
Cameras and video cameras are permitted, however, you should plan on taking photos from your seat.  A professional photographer will take a close-up photo of each graduate as they receive their degree and an additional photo just off stage. For the safety of our graduates and guests, we request you remain in your seat and do not stand in the aisles as you may block the view of individuals who are seated.

How long does the ceremony last?
The ceremony will last approximately 1.5 hours.

Will there be flower sales available at the ceremony?
Yes, a florist will be on site for individuals who wish to purchase flowers.

Where can I meet my graduate after the ceremony?
All guests can connect with graduates following the ceremony on Olivarez Student Plaza (formerly Bostwick Commons).
