Telecourses

Delivered via pre-recorded television broadcast or videotape rental. The television broadcast is at least twice a week. Students receive the same academic credit as an equivalent on-campus class, which can be transferred to other colleges an universities across the country. For a complete listing of available telecourses, see the Online Student Center.

At the beginning of each semester, there is an orientation session for each telecourse. At this orientation students will meet their instructor, receive a class syllabus, and have the opportunity to ask questions. Students will also receive important information regarding textbooks, study guides, broadcast schedules and suggestions to help successfully complete the telecourse. It is highly recommended that students attend their orientation session at the beginning of the semester. If a student does not attend, a course packet will be mailed to them from the instructor.

2008 will be a big year for television: all broadcasting will be transitioned to digital signals, whether you tune them in off the air or over cable (like the College Channel.) This means you need to get a digital tuner, either through a new television or for free from Comcast.

We are one of the first in town to make this transition: by January 15, 2008
Channel 28 will be moving to Comcast Digital Channel 903.

You may call Comcast toll-free at 877-824-2984 to request your free digital tuner. You will need one tuner for each television. Every household that subscribes to Comcast is entitled to TWO FREE DIGITAL TUNERS, WITH REMOTE CONTROLS, for the first 12 months. Additional tuners are available for $1.99 per month.

You may also watch the College Channel live using Real player by clicking on the link: http://real.grcc.edu/ramgen/encoder/grcctv.rm

If you do not have Real player installed on your system, it’s available for free by clicking here: http://www.real.com/freeplayer/?rppr=oneplace

If you have any questions about what’s going on with Television these days, feel free to give Media Technologies a call at 234-3830. We are also planning on scheduling informational sessions next semester.

Library

If a student misses a broadcast of the telecourse, videotapes of each session may be viewed for free in the College Library. If a student prefers to view the telecourse on their own schedule, the complete series can be rented on tape, and in some cases DVD, from the GRCC Library for a nominal, non-refundable fee. Here's the library information.

Testing

Most telecourse students take proctored tests in the GRCC Assessment Center during specific testing hours.
